Friday 14th July 2017

On Thursday, we were visited by Barbara from Dorset Libraries, who introduced this Summer’s reading challenge: Animal Agents. Last year over a quarter of the Stower children completed the challenge, and it would be great to do even better this year! Hot-foot down to Gillingham (or any Dorset) library to get started.

The recent Bikeability Level 2 course was again a success with all 6 children passing. Well done to Martha, Jago, David, Summer, Alfred and Jamie. Mr Timberlake is running a Level 3 course in the Summer with Rosie and Martha. This takes in busier multilane roads and roundabouts. It’s the first time we’ve been able to arrange a Level 3 course and we wish them ‘good luck’.

Recent events and visits have included the Mini-Olympics for R, 1 and 2 at St Mary’s; a visit to Safewise in Weymouth for Y5 & Y6 which was effective and entertaining in putting across some safety messages; a visit to the Wilshire Wildlife Trust reserve at Langford Lakes by YR and KS1, which was enjoyed despite the weather being the wettest of the week if not the month!

Visits and other events have meant that the Friday assemblies haven’t been quite as regular in recent weeks. However, Stars of the Week have included: Owen Ashleigh, Mason, Rocco, Tristan, Sonny and Rosie. Reading Certificates have been awarded to Eleyna (Silver) and Jasper, Daniel and Miranda (Gold). Silver Certificates for 20 stars have gone to: Thomas S, Ralph, Oscar, Thomas W and Mason, with Golds (30 stars) to: Daniel, Tristan, Eleyna, Ashleigh, Jessica, William, Alanah, Florence, James, Sonny, Jake H, Fin, Jacob, Jasper, Annie, Libby F, Miranda and Georgia. Phew! Well done to all for the work and good behaviour that has gained you these awards.

Upcoming events: Sports Day will be on Monday (postponed to Tuesday if weather is dreadful, but at the moment the forecast for Monday is good) and the children will be competing in houses. They have been asked to have PE and swimming kit, and also a t-shirt or similar in their ‘house colour’. That’s Red for Duncliffe, Blue for Hambledon and Green for Melbury.  We are not picnicking on the field this year, but parents are welcome from 1pm to watch and cheer, and we hope to have Mrs Fanner’s mobile cappuccino van for mid afternoon refreshments – many thanks, Mrs Fanner!

Dates for this term:
PTFA Summer BBQ Friday 14th July 5pm-7
Sports Day Monday 17th July 1pm start on the school field
Last day of term and ‘Leaver’s assembly’ Friday 21st July. We hope to start at 2pm.
