Dear Parents and Carers,

What a lovely start to them term it has been, with all returning to school refreshed from the holiday.  The good weather has enabled the children to play on the field and in the classroom there has been a flurry of activity with new topics being started, with buzzers, lights and circuits and an Egyptian museum in Chestnut Class. In Hazel class a pet shop has bee set up, along with our first visit of the term, with children exploring Duncliffe woods and seeing the bluebells. Monarchs and castles have been the focus in Beech class, while in Oak class, children have been focusing on English and Maths skills building up to SATs week (12th May) and have been learning about translation and ratios in Maths and spreadsheets in computing.

NEXT WEEK and BEYOND

Port Regis Gym and Swim

Some parents in Key Stage 2 will have received a letter regarding swimming on a Monday afternoon for this half of term. If your child is due to swim, please ensure they are dressed in PE clothing on Monday mornings and have their swimming costumes and a towel in school. Many thanks. I will be accompanied by Mrs Harris, Mrs Doble and Mrs Lewis taking the swimming groups, while other pupils remain in class with class teachers.

Pool

Our school pool is nearly up and running, with water samples being taken and tested early next week, prior to the children being able to swim. Therefore, in the hopes that water is good to go, and to make the most of the warmer weather due, please would all pupils have swimming costumes and towels in school from Wednesday 30th April. Many thanks.

CLASS NEWS

Oak Class

The week has gone by in a whirl. As we get closer to the SATs festival starting on the 12th of May, we have been busily revising our maths and SPAG. Year 5 and 6 have worked incredibly hard all day every day. In maths we learnt about ratio, proportion, and BIDMAS. The children told me they really enjoyed an impromptu musical interlude during the order of operations lesson. However, I feel that they may not have been telling the whole truth. We have also been looking at relative pronouns and clauses, adverbs, and subordinating conjunctions. Alongside studying the past progressive and present progressive tenses. In RE we have been reflecting on the end of our Lailat al Miraj, which celebrates the night journey of Muhammad. The children gave some thoughtful and considered answers to such questions as ‘what is faith’. Next week we are looking forward to starting our science topic which may involve a bag of crisps for everyone. We will also be finishing our Britain at War topic for history, which will look at the end of WWII and the diary of Anne Frank. (Mrs Clasby)

Chestnut Class

What an exciting week of discovery it’s been! We’ve journeyed back in time to Ancient Egypt, and the children showed fantastic enthusiasm exploring the class museum and taking a virtual tour of the Egyptian exhibits at Liverpool Museum. In English, our historical exploration continues as we research fascinating facts about Tutankhamen and Ancient Egypt to inspire our diary entries.

Our learning journey also included maths, where we’ve been mastering the telling of time on both analogue and digital clocks. In Computing, we’ve begun to explore the exciting world of digital image manipulation, learning how cropping and rotating pictures can dramatically change their effect. It’s been a very busy week, but a truly exciting start to our learning! (Mrs Sanda)

Beech Class

Beech Class have started their learning linked to Magnificent Monarchs, learning about castles and the meaning of chronology. Children have also worked really hard on their 3D flower models based on the designs of Yayoi Kasuma.

Hazel Class

This week has been very busy. It has been lovely listening to the children talk about their holidays. It sounds like everyone had fun! It has been a busy week for learning; we started our new topic Animal Safari which involved looking at how we look after pets, going on a school safari and talking about the different pets we have at home. The children have loved having the chicks (now chickens) back at school, thank you to Thomas and his family for looking after them over the holidays. We have furthered our interest in animals and been to visit day old Valais lambs and we have started to incubate 3 goose eggs. The week ended with a walk to Duncliffe which was a brilliant trip out, the children enjoyed playing in the woods and learning about our local environment and the impact we have on it. (Miss Buxton)
