Dear Parents and Carers

There are a lot of very excited children who are looking forward to the afternoon parade at the Shaftesbury Carnival. From what I have seen so far of the costumes, the Stower Provost Primary School entry will be magnificent. If your child is not taking part, I hope you will give us a big cheer if you’re there to watch. Many thanks to Sam Wattridge and Nikki Tynan for all their work at Carnival Club over the weeks – the children have really enjoyed it.

School Improvement Priorities

Probably the most important skill any child can acquire is the ability to read. Thank you for your support in helping your children become fluent and enthusiastic readers – it will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives. There are some good tips for making the most of reading time on https://www.topmarks.co.uk/parents/ten-tips-on-hearing-your-child-read. One of the key ways to improve comprehension, (other than practising comprehension tests…) is to ask the children all manner of questions beyond what is written in the text, to check their inference and deduction skills. I have printed as set of literal, inferential and evaluative questions below this newsletter to help at home. Please don’t hesitate to contact me or your child’s class teacher if you would like any help with your child’s reading.

KS2 Recorder Club

I will be starting a recorder club for children in Chestnut and Oak Class on Monday Lunchtimes, starting the week after next (8th October). If your child would like to join, please write a note in the homework diary and make sure they remember to show me next week. If you do not already have a recorder, I will be putting in an order at the beginning of next week with a school discount. Let me know if you would like to purchase one on your behalf for your child at a cost of approximately £14.

Year 6 maths booster club

From next week, I will be offering a Year 6 Maths Booster Club on Wednesdays starting at 8:00am. We will be focussing on the areas the children find more complex but is suitable for all of the Year 6 children, whatever their confidence. As before, please sign in your children’s diary by Tuesday to let me know to expect them.

Stars of the Week

Well done to Adam, Jasper and Liam B for their helpful and friendly approach to school this week, and to Joe, Angus and Logan for their fantastic writing. Congratulations also to Annie, Leo and Thomas on their recent birthdays.

Reminder

Autumn Ball 20th October at Hall & Woodhouse, £30 per ticket include a three course meal. Tickets available from Mrs C Heasman 07968709632.
